Sometimes you’ve got to play referee. It’s important to recognize the moments when one dog needs you to step in and advocate for them. I understand the mindset of “they’ll figure it out,” but the truth is, when dogs “figure it out,” it can be more like fighting it out. That’s also how dogs communicate, and sometimes things can escalate quickly. Not every dog will stand up for themselves the way we might expect. Pestering, bullying, and one-sided play are common behaviors that, if left unchecked, can turn into bigger problems. You can’t positive-reinforce your way out of every problem. Some dogs are born with a fighter’s edge. That’s just who they are. And everyone loves to blame or place emphasis on the breed. But I’ve seen Goldens more intense with aggression than some Malinois. It’s not always about the breed, even though there might be tendencies, it’s the dog, it’s about who they are. If you’re not more calm, more confident, consistent and, in some cases (like in this video), more dominant than they are, they’ll run right through you.
