About 8 years ago, I got a phone call regarding a little boy who needed to be watched over the weekend. I was hesitant, it was my early years of fostering and I was learning how to get over my fear of attachment but then I quickly said yes. I find out he was abandoned at the hospital by his previous adoptive parents.. it was heart wrenching to see the pain he was going through. The reality of a Foster Care/Adoptive Family… Today, I got the call from a social worker about an emergency foster placement, and as always, my kids were the first to know. When I sat my kids down to tell them a social worker called about an emergency placement, their first reaction was curiosity. They had so many questions-How old are they? What do they like? When are they coming?—but underneath it all was something deeper: love. They know what it feels like to be the 'new kid' They know the mix of emotions-fear, uncertainty, hope. Earlier this year, my son and I attended my youngest brother's wedding in Uganda. It was a blessing for him to finally meet my family in Africa and a joy for us to do the things I did growing up.
