New patient alert! This young Bald Eagle was found locked by the talons with another eagle—on the ground and in the rain. Thankfully, a quick-thinking neighbor (and veterinarian!) reached out and then jumped into action. With the help of the Environmental Police, he made his way to us for care. After a full exam, wound care, pain meds and time to dry off, he was ready for a well-earned meal. Offered quail and trout filet, he chose both and didn’t leave a single scrap behind. That’s what we love to see! Ever seen an owl ear up close? 👂🦉 In this video, we’re doing ear exams on Aurora the eagle, Cypress the barred owl, (and more) and you’ll see just how HUGE owl ears really are compared to hawks, falcons and eagles. Owls rely on sound to hunt in the dark, so their ear openings are massive and even unevenly placed to help them pinpoint prey. Hawks and eagles? Much smaller ears—they’re built for vision, not sound. Aurora does daily wingersizes. Watching this will show why we keep her perch low to the ground. She has zero lift with her wing injury and from a taller perch she would absolutely injure herself dropping down. Aurora is a very vocal eagle. She is never shy about sharing her opinions. Many people don’t recognize the actual vocalizations of bald eagles as they are often dubbed over with the scream of a red tailed hawk by Hollywood. After rehabilitation, healing, and care, this eagle regained his strength and spirit, and we were honored to give him a second chance at freedom. Releases like this are the heart of what we do.
