⛽️Everything I ate during the Chicago Marathon! This is a combination that works well for my performance goals and body! Race day nutrition plan went almost perfectly this time around! I listened to my body well and took more fuel when needed. 💪 In training, I can usually get away with having carbs every 40-45 minutes for longer runs. However, in race settings, I find a bit more frequent fueling strategy works best! ~25-35 minutes. I was so excited to discover Maurten gels would be offered on course at the Chicago Marathon this year! I first tried their gels several years ago while training for Ironman Triathlons and loved how flavorless they were & that I could get them down without tons of extra water. I chose to not take anything extra on course this year! Ex: Bananas/Pickles! Sad and unfortunate that I dropped my water bottle so early on, it would have been VERY unsafe to turn around and grab it. Stopping at every aid station for Gatorade and Water was chaos and next year I will plan differently! ⛽️I have tried so many types of gels/nutrition throughout the past 4 years and often go in waves of what I can palette! When I try to tell my family how my marathon went and all I can think about is my emotional support pickle that I took from a stranger. 🥒😅
 THROWBACK from the 2023 Chicago Marathon!!! Still thinking about it. HAHAH.
 Adding to the list of things I wish someone told me before the Chicago Marathon...how many strangers will offer runners snacks, fuel, and drinks!! Ranging from 🔥ball shots, to donuts, to pop, to candy!! 
 It was very kind of people to offer so many goodies, and I believe they did so with the BEST intentions, but I had my moms voice screaming in my head to not take treats from strangers. 
 Until later in the marathon when I just NEEDED something salty. A woman had gloves on and was handing athletes pickles from a fork. I gave in and attempted to get it down, I have a hard time chewing after running for 2+ hours. 
 Rule of thumb that goes for everything, nothing new on race day!!! 
 Chicago runners, what have you grabbed from spectators on course? What are some of the craziest things you have seen while running?! 

 4 Days Out!! Taper is hard, I am too excited haha.

I was so prepared to run, but I had no clue what happened when it was all done…👇🫢 Here are 3 things I wish someone told me before running the Chicago Marathon: 1. There is one small hill around mile 21 and after running a very flat course, to me it looked and felt like a mountain. I remember being upset that everyone said the race was flat but failed to mention this moment. 🫢😅 I do remember @gonnaneedmilk was there cheering on runners so loud it made it easier to climb. Some people will walk this portion, I chose to run to make it go by faster. Do what works for you, but be prepared!! This year I am going in with a better plan. 2. After I crossed the finish line I felt SO LOST and LONLEY. Strange I know. I was surrounded by other runners who had just accomplished this incredible challenge, but I felt so alone at the same time. I followed the flow of people and grabbed a water, a blanket, and a banana and collected myself for a minute. I remember some runners looking at one another smiling. A smile back goes a long way. Some people were crying, others sitting on the ground, others throwing up. Everyone was in their own world. I just took in the moment but kept myself from sitting as I feared I might not want to stand up again. It wasn’t until I got my medal from a very kind volunteer that I realized I was done. It took me about 10 minutes to process. 3. The walk to my family/the spectators section was about a mile long. Which took me about 25 minutes as I hobbled my way over. 😅 I decided to call Chase and my mom at this time so they knew I finished the race and could be on the look out for me. At this point it was so nice to hear some familiar voices as other races I have done I saw my family right after the finish line. I didn’t realize how far it would be OR feel. I wish I would have grabbed an extra Gatorade or water and went to the bathroom before making the trek! I hope maybe this is helpful for anyone who has gone through these feelings at the end/post race feel less alone or helpful for someone running Chicago for their first time! ONE YEAR AGO TODAY!! Can’t wait to do it again this Sunday! 🫡 Last year the Chicago Marathon was my first “official” marathon. Up until then, I had completed several DIY marathons and ran 3 marathons in the Ironman Triathlon Races! The energy on race day is unmatched. I remember at mile 2 I saw my family for the first time and it did not even feel like I had started running yet. 😂😂 The crowds kept me going for so long. It was incredible. I went into the race expecting to finish around 4:15-4:25. Mile 14 is where I know a sub 4 hour marathon would be within reach. I decided it was time to focus and just go for it. It would be a physical and mental battle as I never ran that fast at this distance before, but I could do hard things. 4:41 - 2020 - DIY Birthday Marathon 4:30 - 2021 - DIY Ironman 4:29 - 2021 - Ironman Indiana 5:11 - 2022 - DIY Birthday Marathon 5:44 - 2022 - Ironman Chattanooga 3:56 - 2023 - Chicago Marathon 4:15 - 2024 - DIY Birthday Marathon Wonder what I will be able to accomplish this year? 🫡👀😜 Never say never right after a race. 😂😂 I am ready, Chicago! WE DID IT!!!! 💪🫡🙏❤️ No better feeling than crossing the finish line. 🏁 For me, race day is an absolute celebration of ALL the hard work I put into training. My 2024 training has been amazing and so hard. It has pushed me in ways I never thought possible and provided me with so many incredible opportunities. I am so thankful to God. ❤️ Since starting to run in 2020, to now logging very high mileage weeks as I trained for a 50 miler, The Chicago Marathon and next up, my 100 miler this year. This race was not a 12-week training block, it was a 4-year build up. I felt strong! AND I have A LOT to learn and I believe great room to grow. So many things went right, and some things went wrong. No matter what: I can’t believe the effort I was able to give today. When I say I left it all out there, I gave every ounce I could. I am so proud of myself! And hit a 25 minute PR in one year. WHAT I SAID VS. WHAT MY BRAIN WAS SAYING 🧠 I am always humbly reminded what a beast the marathon is. I sign up remembering how incredible I felt before and after, but forget how hard it is during. 😂 These clips I took during the race had me thinking…it is also important to me to spend time reflecting on HOW HARD RUNNNG A MARATHON IS. ‼️About 50x during the race I had to remind myself that I was strong and capable. ‼️I did not give in to the 32 moments where I wanted to walk. ‼️I may have slowed down at the end, but I never quit. I kept putting one foot in front of the other until I was done. And that is why I run. Not because it’s easy and always so much fun. Because it is a reminder of how strong I am physically and mentally. A reminder to keep going. A reminder that no matter how long it takes to cross the finish line, we all can get there. ❤️ I always do my best during a race to be mindful of the thoughts in my brain. What I tell myself, usually believe. So if a negative thought comes up, I try to “wash” it away with 3-10 positive ones. During this race I kept repeating to myself: “this is easy” “we are chilling” “I am strong” “I can do this” “this is fun” I might not have believed those words have the time, but I kept them on repeat. 27 mile day and 20 miles with fueling practice!! 49 days until Tunnel Hill 100 22 days until the Chicago Marathon Last long run before the marathon and fueling went very well today! 10 miles tempo 10 miles pacing 7 miles on the treadmill when I got back The legs are tired but we are so close to hitting another 100 mile week right before taper. I felt STRONG during the 20 miler today. Which gave me great confidence going into the Chicago Marathon as I will have fresh legs, more rest, and a solid carb load. This is the hardest part of training. The hold that this app has on me. 😅 Trying to turn my brain “off” feels impossible sometimes. Some runs I am full of content ideas, some I think of fun new workouts for my clients. Othertimes my mind is completely blank and others just praying that the run is almost over, hahah! I wonder where my brain will go during Tunnel Hill 100. I can’t believe I just did that!!! 🥹🫡‼️💯 So important to celebrate every win during a training block. This week was a big win for me. 🫡My first 100 mile week EVER. 55 days until Tunnel Hill 100 28 days until the Chicago Marathon A combination of speed work, treadmill miles, long runs, two a days, proper nutrition, tons of sleep, cryotherapy, mobility, strength, and good programming to get here safely and healthy!!! I do feel tired. I am hungry. But mostly proud and more prepared for my 100 miler in just a few months. Other than heavy legs, no flare ups/injuries. As long as I feel well and the QUALITY of my runs stays where it is, I will do one more 100 mile week this week before a proper marathon taper. Quality > Quantity Running a few 100 mile weeks is something I have wanted to build up to for quite some time AND something I have the ability to do right now. What works for others might not work for you!! This is your sign to sign up for that marathon!! 💪 Tag 3 friends who are running it with you. 🫡 How did I know I was ready to sign up for my first race? I didn’t. And I definitely wasn’t. What I did know: I was prepared to work hard. I was prepared to show up. I was prepared to be consistent. I knew it would be rewarding. I knew it would be hard. What I didn’t know: How many ‘bad runs’ I’d have. How many times I’d want to stop and walk. How hard it would be. How it would completely change me. How much fun it would be. Just the other day, I was talking with one of my athletes, and we laughed about how mid-race we both thought, “When is this over?” and “I’m never doing this again!” We couldn’t wait for it to end. But almost immediately afterward, we had the same next thoughts: “That was so fun.” “When can I sign up again?” There’s something about pushing through the hardest moments that makes you feel stronger and leaves you wanting more. So if you’re on the fence about signing up—do it. It’s hard, but train well.
