Maxine has developed severe osteoarthritis (OA) in her front legs—with the worst in her elbows. She was first diagnosed in 2020 at age 4. Now, at 9, the disease has progressed enough to cause bone spurs and splintering fragments inside her joints. Yesterday, she had arthroscopic surgery to remove the bone fragments that had likely been causing the mild lameness in her forelimbs the past month. Slide 3 shows what they pulled out—and it’s shocking. The number and size of the fragments… it’s a real “holy sh*t” moment. But here’s what floored me: In the past few months, Maxine hasn’t missed a beat. Still wild. Still sprinting. Still chasing skateboards like she’s got something to prove. That’s what made the doctor pause. Because her x-rays told a different story—one of severe joint damage, the kind that should’ve left her limping, in pain, barely mobile — definitely not able to run. Instead, she’s been flying. The doctor called it remarkable. What it tells us is that something we’re doing is working. The hydrotherapy. The cold laser and PEMF therapy. The hours of research we’ve poured into her supplements. It’s not just prolonging her movement—it’s preserving her quality of life. When the doctor told me, “She looks incredible for her age,” I cried. Over the next few months, Maxine will be doing some hardcore rehab, and we’re bringing you with us—because I know so many of you are where I was a few years ago. Scared. Confused. Maxine didn’t just change my life—she took over. And honestly? Thank god she did. She’s stubborn, dramatic, and judges me more than any subway commuter ever could. But she’s also been the one constant in a city that never stops shifting. This wasn’t the plan. But it’s the best thing that ever happened to me.

Everything is gonna be alright, Maxine. When Maxine was diagnosed with osteoarthritis, I was TERRIFIED. What does this mean? Will it reduce her lifespan? How quickly will this incurable disease progress? I didn’t know anything and didn’t know where to turn. It was an incredibly frustrating time with lots of trial and error. So over the last 6 years, I’ve spent an incredible amount of time getting informed about what an arthritis diagnosis means, what therapies exist, and the scientific studies that have either proven or disproven the treatments and supplements that supposedly help solve these problems for pet parents. In the coming weeks, months, and years, I look forward to sharing everything I’ve learned with you. But if you’re dealing with any of these conditions (arthritis, IVDD, DM, etc.) or are currently watching your best friend get a little older and a little grayer, here’s what I can say — everything is going to be alright. One step at a time. Maxine will be on restricted crate rest for the next 2 months. We’ll be doing laser therapy with our class 3b laser from @respondanimaltherapeutics, which is a non-invasive therapy that is scientifically-proven to reduce pain, inflammation, and swelling in arthritic joints. By promoting endorphin production and improving blood flow, it accelerates tissue repair and restores joint mobility, making it an essential therapy for managing arthritis and improving quality of life in dogs.
