We are the blue dot on these maps (maps are consecutive and start on slide 3). It’s been a wild 48 hours. The decision to evacuate or not was a tricky one, compounded by how much need there was across the county for available stalls based on how many fires there were overall. When they expanded the Lidia fire evacuation warning zones I decided if that moved one section closer to us we would leave immediately, and was speaking with people who were physically there at the fire site to see how it looked as well as people at the evacuation barns and the other barns on our property in the same situation. We were ready if necessary with shippers on standby, waiting with bated breath when thankfully they got significant containment over the Lidia fire and knocked it back. We are safe here after a worrisome 48 hours just in LA County in general. We did not have to evacuate but, like everyone, we were here making those decisions minute to minute over the last two days. I’m hoping the worst of this event is over and we can start to refocus our efforts on those who lost so much. Power is still down, air quality is quite poor with some ash in the air having blown in from [pick anywhere]. We will not ride until the air quality is safe for the horses, but they’re healthy and happy and hungry - I write this over a cacophony of hungry nickers and insistent stomps, horses blissfully awaiting their normal routine and unaware of the stress these last two days held; a naïve impatience I am unexpectedly grateful for. Thank you to my staff for being so helpful, patient, and willing to do whatever necessary, several even opting to stay longer “just to be safe” when I suggested they go home and I would call them back if needed. Your dedication to the safety of these animals is everything. Gregory Jennings for staying the first night for moral support and so I had extra hands on deck in the event of a quick out, Olivia for surviving the second night with me, cramped up in the office getting zero sleep, eating candy and having spooky coyote encounters. Hali Love and Dave for staying late both nights to help organize and prepare just in case and literally making your car into a generator (!!!) to supply us with light and solid internet for hours last night with the power down. To all my clients for your trust, your patience, and your help - you guys braved traffic, wind, and fires to bring us caffeine, snacks, and portable chargers so we didn’t have to leave the grounds and it made an incredible difference. Gabby Agnew and our barn family at Middle Ranch and Hacienda Del Valle for being so on top of things, Juan and staff for driving around all night checking the progress of the fires and keeping us updated with information, photos, and videos to ease our worries and help us each make the best decisions. It made an enormous difference in my confidence to make the decisions I made and just to feel safer. To everyone who reached out: thank you. It’s times like these you see who is in your corner and I’m grateful for the level of love and support from so many. To so many who have suffered unimaginable loss from these fires, we offer our deepest condolences with heavy hearts and will be eager to offer help in any way we can in the coming weeks. To those still waiting to hear, we’ll hold onto hope for the best outcome. I’ll post updates if anything changes. Things are settled but we all know far from over, however I think if we can take some small cue from this madness it is to celebrate everything positive, no matter how fleeting.
