Replying to @Bride Nearsightedness or myopia occurs when the focal length or focal distance of your eye is shorter than the actual length of your eye. That’s why nearsightedness is also called short-sightedness. When the focal length or focal distance of your eye is short, light won’t be able to reach your retina and your vision will be blurry. The traditional method of correction for myopia or nearsightedness is the use of divergent or minus lenses. Your doctor needs to accurately determine the exact amount of minus lenses to help extend the focal length or focal distance of your eye up to your retina so you can see clearly. Although minus lens prescriptions can accurately extend the focus of central light rays onto your retina and improve your vision, these traditional minus lenses overextend the focal length of your peripheral light rays beyond your eye’s actual axial length. This causes hyperopic defocus. Hyperopic defocus is what stimulates your eyeball to grow longer. As your eyeball grows longer, the focal distance or focal length that your current minus lenses provide, will no longer be enough for the extended length of your eye. Your nearsightedness worsens, and the cycle goes on and on. Most people are only concerned about the consistent increase of their eye grade. But what they actually need to be more concerned about is the consistent growth of their eyes because it can lead to sight-threatening eye diseases. As your eyes grow longer and longer, your retina becomes thinner and thinner. Oftentimes, degenerative myopia leads to retinal tears, and eventually, retinal detachment. It can also lead to open angle glaucoma, early cataract, and macular degeneration.
