A video of a senior punching another patron at a Vancouver Island Tim Hortons has garnered millions of views and prompted a police investigation. The altercation happened in late April, but 24-year-old Isaac Campbell posted the video on social media over the weekend. It appears the person who was punched is a teenager, he said. Campbell said he was standing in line at the Tim Hortons on the Patricia Bay Highway in Saanich when a chocolate bar whizzed past his head. “I turned around. There’s like a 14-year-old kid standing there,” Campbell said. “I just kind of gave him the stink eye and then I heard an old man start yelling, so I just whip the phone out. I knew something was going to go down.” The video shows a young patron sitting in a booth and getting hit multiple times by an older man. Campbell said the boy was throwing food and other items around the restaurant, including at the senior’s wife. #ctvnews #news #canada

Seated around the summit table ahead of Carney’s official opening remarks, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni appeared to roll her eyes during an interaction with French Prime Minister Emmanuel Macron. With all the leaders’ microphones muted, Meloni can be seen leaning over while Macron whispers something to her behind a closed fist, prompting Meloni to look up at him. The two then give slight nods, and she makes a thumbs-up gesture. About 30 seconds later, Macron is again seen whispering to Meloni, before she looks up at him and rolls her eyes. The camera then cut away. With muted microphones and shielding their mouths, it’s unclear what the French president said to elicit the Italian prime minister’s response. #ctvnews #news #g7

West Nile is back in the headlines, with mosquitoes testing positive for the virus in Toronto, Niagara Region and York Region in the last week. While there haven’t been any confirmed cases in humans in Ontario so far this year, there are a few crucial things to know about the virus and how to protect yourself from it. West Nile is a mosquito-borne virus that has the potential to cause fatal neurological disease. It is transmitted to humans through mosquitoes. Mosquitoes initially catch West Nile by feeding on perching birds, like robins, that habour the virus, creating a cycle, explained Dr. Robyn Klein, a professor at Schulich Medicine & Dentistry whose focus is on neurovirology and neuroimmunology. “They are passing the virus between mosquitoes and birds and that’s how it’s maintained in nature,” she said. Some birds, like crows, are more susceptible to West Nile and can be killed by the virus. If there are several dead crows in an area, it`s often a sign that the virus is nearby. #ctvnews #news #westnile

Carriere received a letter from Canada Post indicating delivery agents would no longer raise the signal device on the mailboxes when mail is delivered. “And it seems a little bit odd that given a time when Canada Post is struggling to survive and wanting large raises and wanting to gain more of the market share that they’re going to offer less service and less convenience to the public when they deliver their mail,” Carriere said. A resident in Summerstown, Ont. received a handwritten note from a carrier that said they would no longer be allowed to raise the flag. #ctvnews #news #canadapost

Canada will boost the salaries of its soldiers in order to recruit new and retain current members. Bonuses are also being offered to soldiers who are deployed to fight natural disasters that occur in Canada or are assigned to Arctic missions. The federal government says these changes are needed to reflect current global challenges. The Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) is still short 12,200 soldiers of operational force. Sailors, privates and aviators will get a 20 per cent increase in pay. For a private, that equates to an additional $723 each month and translates into $52,044 annually. Reservists will receive a smaller pay increase of 13 per cent. #ctvnews #news

Earth is spinning faster this summer, making the days marginally shorter and attracting the attention of scientists and timekeepers. July 10 was the shortest day of the year so far, lasting 1.36 milliseconds less than 24 hours, according to data from the International Earth Rotation and Reference Systems Service and the US Naval Observatory, compiled by timeanddate.com. More exceptionally short days are coming on July 22 and August 5, currently predicted to be 1.34 and 1.25 milliseconds shorter than 24 hours, respectively. The length of a day is the time it takes for the planet to complete one full rotation on its axis —24 hours or 86,400 seconds on average. But in reality, each rotation is slightly irregular due to a variety of factors, such as the gravitational pull of the moon, seasonal changes in the atmosphere and the influence of Earth’s liquid core. As a result, a full rotation usually takes slightly less or slightly more than 86,400 seconds — a discrepancy of just milliseconds that doesn’t have any obvious effect on everyday life. #news #ctvnews #canada

Environment Canada is warning Toronto residents to limit their time outdoors today due to poor air quality caused by wildfire smoke. A special air quality statement has been issued for the GTA and much of southern Ontario as wildfire smoke drifts into the region. On Friday morning, Toronto’s air quality index was placed at a 7 out of 10, which is classified as “high risk.” The national weather agency says smoke levels are expected to rise in the area this morning and into this afternoon. “As smoke levels increase, health risks increase,” the advisory warns. “Limit time outdoors. Consider reducing or rescheduling outdoor sports, activities and events.” As of 10 a.m. on Friday, Toronto’s air quality was ranked eighth worst in the world, according to data from Swiss air quality tracker IQAir. The only other Canadian city with worse air quality than Toronto on Friday was Montreal, which was ranked second worst among all cities globally. #ctvnews #news #canada #toronto #airquality

A lawsuit filed against Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen is accusing the fried chicken chain of buying “unsafe” meat from an unauthorized seller that was allegedly storing and packaging raw chicken in residential garages in Ontario. The lawsuit was filed at the Ontario Superior Court of Justice on May 26 by ADP, a former raw chicken supplier to Popeyes. The company alleges they lost their contract with Popeyes after bringing forward its concerns about the “unsafe supply” of products. Popeyes, Restaurant Brands International (RBI)—the Toronto-based company that owns the fast-food chain—and Restaurant Services Canada Inc. (RSCI), the supply chain manager, are all named in the lawsuit. Popeyes, for its part, said in a statement to CTV News that the claims from ADP Direct Poultry Ltd. are unfounded and that it found “no evidence” to support them following an investigation. #ctvnews #news #canada #toronto #popeyes #lawsuit
