This is one of the best road trips you can take in British Columbia, Canada this spring and summer! 🙌 🚘 This road trip starts in Victoria, the capital city of British Columbia on Vancouver Island, and goes all the way up to Tofino, with a detour to Juan de Fuca Provincial Park. ✈️ You can reach Vancouver Island either by flying directly into Victoria or Nanaimo. 🚢 Alternatively, you can fly into Vancouver and take the ferry to either Victoria or Nanaimo. 📆 It took us 5 days to do this road trip. To save money, we chose to travel in a super cool vintage Westfalia camper van from Base Camp Adventure Rentals. Road tripping on Vancouver Island in that van gave us the freedom to hop from one place to the next and start each day bright and early without the stress of finding a hotel every night. Is it a fossilized dinosaur egg? A rock pimple? An earth bubble? None of the above - it’s a concretion! Concretions are relatively common features in sedimentary rocks, but I haven’t seen many personally - especially not ones of this size or shape - so I was very excited to see such a symmetrical one popping out of the rock on my recent visit to Gabriola Island just off of Vancouver Island BC 🌊 Me and @thenatureeducator (who helped me film this ❤️) went to this beach at sunset the night before - but it was high tide so we didn’t see all of these concretions. We spotted this perfectly rounded one as we were leaving but the tide was too high to access it. We came back in the morning at low tide and were blown away by how many more concretions of all sizes were now visible! And this is just one of the many fascinating features in the sandstone of Gabriola Island 🤩 Sometimes concretions contain well preserved fossils from millions of years ago (like the ammonites of the Jurassic Coast 😍) but many can also just have a pebble or even a random grain of sand as the nucleus. They can be as small as a pebble or as large as a boulder, lumpy or smooth, round or more oval shaped - lots of variety. They also show lots of different erosional and weathering features, making each one unique from the rest. As you can see in the video, this beach has lots of concretions, not just the one I focus on. Many were still inside the rocks but in the process of being eroded, some were fully eroded out of the host rock and broken apart on the shore, and I’m sure there are lots more hidden within the rock out of sight - for now. 🌊🪨 #geology #geologist #vancouverislandbc #vanislebc #gabriolaisland #gabriolabc #geotourism #sciencecommunication #sciencecommunicator
